There is No God but Jehovah

idols-by-Mahesh-Telkar

Today’s reading is Isaiah 41-45.

“Assemble yourselves and come;
draw near together,
you survivors of the nations!
They have no knowledge
who carry about their wooden idols,
and keep on praying to a god
that cannot save.
Declare and present your case;
let them take counsel together!
Who told this long ago?
Who declared it of old?
Was it not I, the LORD?
And there is no other god besides me,
a righteous God and a Savior;
there is none besides me.”
–Isaiah 45:20-21 (ESV)

Vishnu is no god. Allah is no god. Krishna is no god. Ishtar is no god. Molech is no god. Mammon is no god. Zeus is no god. I am no god. You are no god. Jehovah is God. What more needs to be said?

Tomorrow’s reading is Isaiah 46-50.

I Am the Lord Your God

10-commandments-by-japferp

I Am the LORD Your God, Who Brought You Out… (Bulletin Article)

When God gave His list of 10 commandments, He began with a simple prologue:

I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery (Exodus 20:2, ESV).

God asserted His right to command the Israelites. If not for Him, they would be enslaved to the Egyptians. If not for Him, they would live and die in the squalor of slavery. If not for Him, they would be a dominated people. Because of Him, they were able to thrive. Because of Him, they had their own land. Because of Him, they were free.

But there is more than this assertion in this statement. At the beginning of this covenantal list of commandments, God explains why He set them free. He did not set them free so they could go anyplace possible and follow any course possible. He set them free to serve Him.

God took them out of the Egyptian bondage to slavery and would bring them into the land He would give them so they could serve Him properly. Of course, there was more to their service than these 10 commandments. But these give a good summary of His will for them. They were to serve Him and no other Gods. They were to remember Him with honor and devote their lives to Him. They were to serve each other in a God glorifying way, neither murdering, stealing, lying, nor coveting. Jesus points out that all of this is summed up by the two commands: 1) Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind and 2) Love your neighbor as yourself.

Fast forward to our deliverance. We were just as bound, just as enslaved. God set us free. His truth sets us free (John 8:32). But why? Why did God set us free? Did He set us free so we could go about pursuing any possible behavior? Going anyplace possible? No. He set us free so we would be free to pursue Him, so we would be free to obey Him, so we would be free to serve Him.

As Galatians 5:13 says: “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (ESV). Then again, Peter adds in I Peter 2:16: “Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God” (ESV).

“But that means I’m not free,” we cry. The thing we need to understand is that no one is ever free in the sense of living in any possible way and then choosing the consequence of those actions separate from behavior. The fact is we are either slaves of sin or we are slaves of God. That is, we either let sin be our master and dictate our behavior or we let God be our master and dictate how we behave. Notice what Paul says in Romans 6:20-23:

When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (ESV).

If someone wants to sin, they are free from God’s will. But they are not free to choose an eternity in God’s presence while they surrender to sin’s lead. On the other hand, if someone longs to obey God, through Jesus Christ (cf. Romans 7:25), they are freed from sin’s domination. They are also freed from the consequences of that domination. I can’t imagine anyone surrendering to God’s control and wanting to choose the consequence of hell, but I know plenty who fear it will happen. It cannot. When we become a slave to God and to obedience, it necessarily leads to righteousness (Romans 6:16).

These are our options. Stay enslaved to sin or let God set you free from sin so you are free to be enslaved to Him. “Some choice,” we might be tempted to say, “I want to be my own master.” To be honest, that is simply not an option. Read what Paul said in Romans 7:7-25. When we strive to be our own masters, sin ultimately takes control. I suggest you make the choice not based on trying to be free from a master rather than enslaved. I suggest you make the choice based on the better master. Sin is a terrible taskmaster. It wants to destroy and dominate you. It leads to death and only death. God, on the other hand, is a phenomenal master. He is not arbitrary, but loving. His rule is for your good. And ultimately, His will leads you to abundant and everlasting life. What could be better?

So, understand this. God hasn’t delivered us to live in any way possible. He has delivered us to walk in His good works (Ephesians 2:8-10). Let’s let God be in control. He deserves it. And ultimately, we want what His control has to offer.

Letting God Speak for Himself

Mt-sinai-hike-by-teresasusan

Today’s reading is Exodus 34-38.

“The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and fourth generation” (Exodus 34:6-7, ESV).

What more can I add?

Don’t Be a Derision to Your Enemies

golden-calf-by-Jasper180969

Today’s reading is Exodus 29-33.

“And when Moses saw that the people had broken loose (for Aaron had let them break loose, to the derision of their enemies)…” (Exodus 32:25, ESV). How many enemies deride, laugh, mock Christians for pursuing other idols? How many times have we heard those in the world say, “Why should I follow your God, I’m as good as you are?” When idols distract us, we tell the world it doesn’t matter who your god is. We not only become a derision, we make God a derision. Today, let’s live in such a way that those around us will know it really does matter who your god is. Half measures avail nothing. Let’s pursue God with wild and reckless abandon. Then if our enemies deride us, at least’s its for a good reason.

We’d love to know what you got out of today’s reading. Let us know by leaving a comment.

Tomorrow’s reading is Exodus 34-38.

No Other Gods

idols-by-Mahesh-Telkar

Today’s reading is Exodus 19-23.

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.” That seems reasonable. Baal didn’t deliver Israel. Ashtoreth didn’t deliver Israel. Molech didn’t deliver Israel. Why, O why would they ever even want to follow some other god? And yet, money didn’t die for my sins. Sex didn’t die for my sins. Food didn’t die for my sins. Fame, power, fortune, and influence didn’t die for my sins. Why, O why would I ever even want to follow some other god? Today…no idols.

We’d love to hear what you got out of today’s reading. Let us know in the comments section.

Tomorrow’s reading is Exodus 24-28.

Seeing God in Your Life

Praise-the-Lord-by-lifeblessons

Today’s reading is Genesis 45-48.

“So it was not you who sent me here, but God,” said Joseph, explaining to his brothers how he ended up as vice-regent to Pharaoh. I wonder how easy it would have been to say the same thing while being shuffled into Potipher’s presence or when being thrown into prison? Once everything works out, it is easy to see the presence, purpose, and plan of God. The challenge is trusting the purpose of God while still in the midst of the mess. Remember, if you love God, He is working everything together for your ultimate good (Romans 8:28). One day, you will be able to see that God really had your best interests at heart with whatever you are going through now. Even though it may be harder to believe that today, hang your hat on it and surrender to God.

God of Success

Today’s reading is Genesis 21-24.

How could Abraham’s oldest servant possibly get back to Haran, walk right up to Abraham’s family, and find a woman willing to go back and marry Isaac? God, the God of success, the God whose Word does not come back to Him void, but accomplishes that for which He sends it out (Isaiah 55:10-11). Sadly, we too often think of success in terms of getting fame, fortune, finances, popularity, prestige, and personal glory. But this is not success. Abraham’s steward wasn’t successful because he helped Abraham become a rich man, but because he pursued God’s plans of blessing for Abraham’s family, and thus the whole world. Romans 8:28-30 shows us this very same God of success. When we hang on to Him, loving Him, He will work things together for good, assuring that we will be justified and sanctified. Today, I can keep serving the Lord because I know He is working on my behalf and He is the God of Success.

God of the Impossible

God-creating-man-by-Waiting-For-The-Word

Today’s reading is Genesis 17-20.

“Is anything too hard for the LORD.”–Genesis 18:14

He is God who brings something into existence from nothing, Who does what man can hardly imagine, Who brings life from the dead. He brought life to Abraham’s dead body and Sarah’s dead womb. Is it so shocking that He brought life into Mary’s womb? Is it so shocking that He brought life into Jesus’ tomb? Is it so shocking that He will bring life to us who have been dead in sin? Do not let Satan turn you from God’s promise today because of your flaws, mistakes, even sins. Hang on to the God of the impossible. He will bring life into you (Romans 8:11; Ephesians 2:5).

God Our Defender

shields-by- hans-s

Today’s reading is Genesis 13-16.

“After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: ‘Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”–Genesis 15:1

He had just defeated the kings of Shinar, Ellasar, Elam, and Goiim, freeing his nephew Lot, and doing what Bera, Birsha, Shinab, Shemeber, and the king of Zoar could not. He had heard the blessing of Melchizedek: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” Why had he won? Because he was so awesome? No. Because he was God Shielded. What application can we make today other than the words of the Psalmist:

“Out of my distress I called on the LORD;
the LORD answered me and set me free.
The LORD is on my side; I will not fear.
What can man do to me?
The LORD is on my side as my helper;
I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.
It is better to take refuge in the LORD
than to trust in man.
It is better to take refuge in the LORD
than to trust in princes.”
–Psalm 118:5-9

God Filled means God Shielded and God Defended. Blessed be God Most High!

A Name for God

name-by-jack-dorsey

Today’s reading is Genesis 9-12.

“Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.'”–Genesis 11:4

The true contest. For whom will I make a name? God or me? I’m tempted to make a name for me; fame would be delightful. But in the end, any fame I accomplish for myself will be lost. The only true hope is in making a name for God, bringing Him the glory. I need to live in such a way that people learn about God and know that it matters who my God is. That is the essence of being God Filled, making a name for God.
